The first meeting of the Elementary Redistricting Committee is this Thursday, November 14, 2024 at 6pm in the conference room at the SPS District Office, 31 Pierce St. An agenda for the meeting can be found here.
Redistricting is the process of redrawing the boundary lines that determine where students attend elementary school and the Elementary Redistricting Committee will be tasked with exploring how best to do this as we deal with an increase in student population and overcrowding in our school buildings. This redistricting process will impact families at all of our elementary schools.
The Elementary Redistricting Committee will be meeting on the second Thursday of each month, starting with this first meeting on November 14th. Stoughton High School Principal Juliette Miller is chairing this Committee. Committee members also include parent/guardian representatives from each elementary school and preschool, as well as elementary principals, elementary teachers/staff, the SPS Director of Facilities and Grounds, administration from special education and ELL, and two School Committee members. These meetings are open to the public and families will receive updates on this topic throughout the redistricting process.
The final redistricting plan is contingent on what happens with the new elementary school building project and the status of the South Elementary School. The District is still prioritizing the building of a new consolidated elementary school, but is also contingency planning for a modular classroom plan at three of our elementary schools if this effort is not successful. It is important to note that some form of redistricting will be occurring regardless of what happens, with the expected implementation for redistricting happening as early as 2026-2027.
